Hallowseveathon Announcement !

Every year I like to do a Halloween based readathon with spooky reads. This year it takes place
during the last full week in October (22nd - 28th).

Here are the challenges:

As an extra challenge to myself I want to cram as many supernatural creatures into this as possible, (wizards, vampire, ghost, werewolves, dragons etc) but you don't have to partake in that challenge unless you want to.

When The Curtain Falls | Book Review

This book follows two storylines, but through the same stage play. The first is in 1952 and the other in the present. The first is Fawn and Walter whilst the other is Olive and Oscar in the present day. The storylines follow what happened during the same production being run nearly 70 years apart, though there are magic and ghosts throughout.

The story within itself wasn't bad, but think it needed to be fleshed out in a few parts, especially the modern day one. It made me feel like I was watching it rather than experience it. If it was improved upon the book could have been one of my favourites this year. Because it wasn't that fleshed out I was very distracted and was easily confused by it, though the 1952 plot was much better and I enjoyed that part of the book.

The dialogue was ok but could have been a little better to help the book along a little bit.

I didn't care much for many of the characters, They almost all fell flat and were very two dimensional. I didn't care for Oscar too much even though he was one of the nicer characters, though I loved Fawn and Walters storyline and found theirs much better fleshed out.

I think Carrie could have done better with this book given that her other books are considerably better than this one. I hope that next time she takes her time and realises that quality is much better than quality with her books. I can only give this 2 stars on Goodreads and can't recommend this one, but will
probably read her next book.

The Missing Girl Review

The story was just ok, it was interesting but dragged out a little. I was sometimes confused as it was sometimes confused by who was who.

For the most part it was easy to read through and the dialogue was good and helped with the story a lot.

I wasn't attached to any of the characters so didn't really care too much about them. Though some were ok overall and I thought Martha was a very weird kid.

The antagonist in this one was a naturally dislikable character anyway, but I never really thought they were capable of what they did whilst reading the book.

Overall it was just ok and enjoyed some of the plot points, the ending is
really nice. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, but can't really recommend.

You're The One That I want | Review

Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Rob and Ben thought their friendship was unbreakable. But love changes everything.

Maddy loves Rob and will soon marry him, but one night at University Ben drunkenly tells her how he feels. Now Maddy has a choice to make.

I enjoyed the story, it was a typical love triangle (which I don't always like, but Giovanna pulled it off) and it also had a will she won't she kind of vibe to it too. It was very quick and easy to get into, I was also interested throughout and wanted to know more.

All of Gi's books are easy to read and the dialogue was just as good to read. Sometimes it wasn't even the writing, but the inner monologue of some of the characters that was very well done. It kept the pace of the book very good.

You can easily relate to the characters and can feel sorry for them in the book sometimes. Having compassion for the characters I think shows how well it was written.

I found all of them interesting to read about, though there was were some stupid decisions made in the book, but I think it makes them more relatable and brings you closer to them.

I can give this 4 stars on Goodreads and can highly recommend.

The Death Of Mrs Westaway Review

Hal receives letters leaving her something in a will, hoping to get money to pay off a threatening loan shark. She hopes to use her skills as a tarot reader and cold reader to get some of the money despite thinking she was sent the letter by mistake.

I loved this story, it has me gripped from the start. I was as amazing if not better than her previous books. It was well paced and easy to read too and all done in her usual style. Though I did figure out one of the plot twists, I didn't take away from the story and loved it just as much and was still terrified for Hal in the last few chapters.

The main character was great and loved her from the start. A lot of the other characters were interesting to read about as much as Hal. Mrs Warren was very interesting and tried to warn her to stay well away despite her being a very cold person.

It was a great read and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads and definitely
 recommend.

Animal Farm Review (spoilers)

"All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others". Although about political suppression, it also makes me think of slavery.

This book is about the animals of Manor Farm (AKA Animal Farm), who are sick of the humans treating them like trash and overworking them. As consequence, a revolution occurred and the animals overthrew the owner of the farm. This book is about the aftermath of all of this.

The story was great, it was very interesting and it was very interesting to see things to go full circle. The animals who end up oppressed by humans get oppressed by the pigs and they end up being indistinguishable from the humans. It also shows communism working.

The writing is great, it's short, quick and very easy to read. It isn't too complex so that you can understand it fully, to make you understand the plot more in-depth.

I loved most of the characters, the pigs and humans grow to be one in the same and I hated both by the end. They end up as greedy as the humans so there is no difference between the two. By the end they become one, mimicking Stalin and Hitler who were corrupt and used their own people for their own gain.

I found this to be a great read and is a great look into communism and totalitarian regimes.  I gave this four stars on Goodreads.

I enjoyed this and loved that the original cast in the book are back in the series more.

Library Haul ! August 2018

• I Am Malala. This is about a young woman who was shot at point blank range by the Taliban. Without much chance of survival and being transferred to a Birmingham Hospital in the UK for specialist treatment and safety, she miraculously pulls through. This book is her story.
• Animal Farm by George Orwell. This book looks at politics through the eyes of farm animals and rings a lot of truth with the Soviet regime and communism. It starts with a revolution and the animals wanting a better life. Though it isn't how things turn out, the animals form their own kind of government and leaders which aren't really any better than the human ones.
• The Smal Hand by Susan Hill. This book is about a man called Adam Snow who is an antique bookseller and while on a business trip, takes a wrong turn and finds an abandoned Edwardian house. Being curious, he had a look around and feels the unmistakable felling of a small cold child touching his hand. At first puzzled, he then soon feels terrible fear, panic and is visited by nightmares. Yet he is determined to learn more about the house, but while searching for an antique book, he ends up pulled further into the mystery of the house and the child.

July Wrap Up

Carve The Mark | review

Well, what can I say? I wasn't a massive fan of this, to be honest, I can't even remember half of it now that I think about it, which is not a good sign. Apparently, though there was controversy saying there was racism in here, I didn't see any.

There are things I liked about the book. I liked the ships, they are my kind of fantasy thing and loved the description of the interior of them. I also think Cyra's gift was pretty crappy, feeling constant pain is nasty. I also liked the part about tattoos/marks about remembering those who you've killed or lost. Some of it reminded me of a book called Ink, where they get tattoos when they, make achievements.

Though I did get confused throughout the book and thought it was me not listening to the audiobook properly, when reading other peoples reviews, they also seemed confused. I was listening properly at least.

I am undecided as to whether to give this 2 or 3 stars on Goodreads.

Eve Of Man Review (spoilers)

Eve, she is the first girl born in 50 years. When she turns 16 she must decide between love and the future of the human race.

I loved the story and the concept grabbed my attention immediately. I liked the pacing a lot, it wasn't too fast or slow, I think mainly because It's part of a trilogy and it can take a little more time to get through the plot than a standalone. It was very quick and easy to read, it was very easy to get into and when I was reading it never wanted to put it down.

I found it very easy to read, but with the dialogue don't have a lot to say. The dialogue works well with the book and pushes the plot and helps a lot, but don't have much of an opinion of it. I also loved the reference that the authors made in the letters to Eve in regards to her mother ( calling her mummer), as It represents the author's real lives with their children.

I loved Eve and Bram. I feel they both had some relatable aspects in the book. Bram had a broken down and crappy relationship with his father, which I think some people can understand. Whilst Eve felt very trapped and angry which, I also think other teenagers could also relate to. I also think Eve is a little like Tris from Divergent, as she is the only one of her kind.

They both had to make rushed and/or irrational decisions sometimes in the book, which teens do, but I also think it pushes things along a little and gave them the information they both needed. For example, Bram knows about the frozen women and Eve's father is alive, but she doesn't). As the series goes on I hope she will find out some of these things.

I liked some of Eves Carers in the book, who are called mothers but also hated Viviane who was heartless and cold. I loved that Vivianne's schemes where all getting screwed up by Eve and Bram so much. I also thought Holly was interesting, although not a real person I found it interesting that Eve could tell them apart by their eyes and when Bram was controlling her.

I can highly recommend and gave this 5 stars on Goodreads.

Make Me By Lee Child | Review

Jack Reacher is an ex-major in the military and military police. He has nowhere to go and of all the places he could go and al the time in the world. he ended up in Mothers Rest, a perfect one-day stopover. Though he, of course, ends up neck deep in the dark web and right in the heart of darkness.

Overall the book was good, but there was a lot of repeating of the same known facts at the start of the book, which I found irritating. As much as I understood that at the beginning, they may not have had much info, I was a little irritated. I was also confused between 300 and 350 pages and got a little lost for a little bit, I don't know if it was the book or me not taking enough notice, but after a chapter or 2, I was fine.

The writing was pretty basic, but for most of the book, it was just about good enough. The conversations weren't always realistic, but there was one on page 163 that I enjoyed about one of the characters forenames. 

There wasn't much description of the main characters in this book. For Jack, I understand as he has been in 20 previous books in the series, but for Chang, I don't. All I can gather is that she may be Asain, going by her surname first and JAcks description of her hair, saying that it's like ink when wet.

There was one character that I think could have at least had a name. Throughout the book all, he was known as was the man with the ironed jeans and blow-dried hair. Given that he had a name IT would've saved the author efforts of typing this out so much and the reader efforts into reading it over and over.

Overall I did enjoy the book but it needs improvement.

Dream A Little Dream | Review

Sarah is doing just fine. She's been single for 5 years and has to spend an ungodly amount of time with her ex, his "perfect" new girlfriend and their mutual friends. And yes her job a PA is tedious and workes for one of the worst men in London. But she's really ok. She's Ok (ish).

I loved the book, I love Giovanna's books in general and love the fluffiness the books have when her characters fall in love. The pacing was good and I always wanted to read more making it so easy to read. I was never got bored and there were some twists in the book, but they happen in the seconds half of the book, though not explosive twists, there are more than enough to keep the reader interested.

The writing as always easy to read, her writing style is always a breeze to read in all of her books as
well as this one. It's never confusing or cheesy in writing or dialogue.

I loved Sarah, she was very relatable. Crappy boss' and having to spend a horrible amount of time around an ex is very relatable to a lot of people.

I liked Brett too, I like how Sarah and Brett communicated and reacted to each other in this book. I loved that they eventually got on so well after him being rejected a couple of times.

I liked her roommate, she was funny throughout the book and loved how she encouraged Sarah to make an effort with Brett while taking the mick at the same time.

I overall really enjoyed the ook and gave it 5 stars on Goodreads, I hope to read all of her books soon and can definitely recommend her books.

Whistle In The Dark | Review

This book is about Jen and her daughter Lena. Her daughter being found after 4 days being missing. She's at her wit's end trying to find out what happened to her while missing during those 4 days.

I found it very easy to read and enjoyed the dialogue. I found parts of it very funny, especially showing Lena's sense of humour, especially helped the writing.

Lana and Jen are the most relatable. Jen being your average worrying mum and Lana very interesting to reading about and trying to understand her and find out what happened. I enjoyed either perspective too, such as her dad who had a funny conversation about his daughter being gay.

Very good book and as good as her first book Elizabeth Is Missing. A Great 5 stars and can recommend,

Black Boy Review

This book is an autobiography about the author's life as a child and young man.

I found it very interesting story, seeing how the relationships are between black and white people is fascinating. I was never confused at the story and found it easy to read.

The writing was pretty basic as well as some of the dialogue too. Had it been better I would have enjoyed the book a lot more.

I really liked Richard his brother and mother too. Though I wasn't too bothered by the rest of the characters at all.

It gets a reasonable 5 * on Goodreads
 and probably won't read anything else from the author,

April Wrap Up 2018

Didn't like the first half because of Harry's moaning, but that aside I enjoyed the book overall.

I enjoyed this one a lot 

Thornhill | Review

This is about a young girl called Mary, she lives in care. All she wants is a friend, someone she can trust. Her story is told through her diary entries throughout the book.

There is another storyline from another girl called Ella. She lives across from Thornhill and her storyline is told years later through pictures. She is curious about the girl that lived in Thornhill.

The plot was good and I was glued to the edge of my seat while reading this, all the while wanting to find out more. It's a very quick and easy to read and was easy to get into.

The writing was very good and easy to read. I thought the dialogue was very well done in this and was very realistic, making the characters more realistic. This made the book come across even better.

I liked Mary, the orphan. I felt bad for her in the book. Though I do think she was too trustworthy throughout the book.

I liked Ella's curiosity too and liked that she wanted to help Mary.

There is a social worker in this that was nice to Mary but represented most of the care system pretty well. Mostly in that, although she wants and tries to help, not enough is always done to help the most vulnerable people in the care system.

So overall, a very good book and can recommend. I gave this 5 stars on Goodreads.

The Keeper Of Lost Things | Review

The Keeper Of Lost Things follows two storylines. 
1: Laura, Anthony, Freddie and Sunshine. Anthony is the keeper of lost things, he finds things and tries to return them to whom they belong.

When Anthony dies he leaves everything to Laura his assistant. But for security and his home, she has to try and return some of the lost things and change things for the better.

2: Eurise and Bomber. Bomber is a publisher and Eurise works for him. She falls in love with him, but he doesn't think of her the same way.

Laura's timeline is in the present, while Eurise and Bombers are progressive, starting in the past and ending in the present. 

The plot was good, it was very steady and although there were no big reveals, I think there was a solid motion behind it to keep me interested throughout.I was never bored and always wanted to know more, It was very easy to read and kept me enthralled.

The writing was very good and didn't find it to minimal or overdone in any way. The dialogue was great and loved Sunshines dialogue thoroughly.

I found this book to be very character driven and loved the characters. They were all relatable and loveable (except maybe bombers sister, she was a nightmare). The only stupid decision that was made in the book was when Laura tried to push away Freddie.

Loved Eurise and Bomber too and like that, both timelines character had a love for dogs. I recommend highly and give this book 5 stars.

Some Kind Of Wonderful | Review

This book is about a woman called Lizzy who has just reached the end of a 10-year relationship and is trying to heal and find herself afterward. Though the book itself wasn't bad, I much prefer Giovanna Fletcher's other books, they are written a little better.

I also found that although she was supposed to find herself in her story arc, there just wasn't enough of her doing anything about it. She wanted to do a lot of different things, but only does a handful of things. Even then they aren't all that interesting.

I can only give this 3 stars on Goodreads.

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz | Review

Ahhh, It brought a tear to my eye by the end. It's hard to rate a book like this. Though fiction it is based on true events and lake's time in concentration camps, it's very hard to rate. The story was good, as was the writing. I would have given it 4 stars had I not welled up a little by the end making me love the man even more.

Grandpa's Great Escape | Review

Grandpa has become confused in his old age and believes he's back in World War 2 when he was a fighter pilot. The only one who can understand him is his grandson Jack. Together they must embark on one last adventure "up, up and away".

The story was very good, it was fast paced and easily grabbed my attention, keeping me hooked and wanting more.

It was a very quick and easy read and should think most 8-year-olds could manage to speed through this. The dialogue was very good and think kids would love some of the dialogue from Grandpa and the local newsagent. 

I loved Grandpa and Jacks characters especially. They were fun to read about and was a joy to read the fun that they had during the book.

Great story for young readers and has a surprising depth in helping young children deal with elderly relatives with dementia and other similar problems, causing the people they love to slowly change. A very solid 5 stars on Goodreads,
